Writers! Build a Free Traffic Generating Network, Part Three!

So, today I am going to share with you the basic recipes I set up in my own and in ever surrogate IFTTT account, whether they be for clients, or pen names that I have established for marketing purposes. But, before I get into that, let me show you what I am finding out so far in my stats.

I have worked exclusively with my writing blog, MarkRMorrisJr.com a blog that has recently been migrated from hosted Wordpress to Blogger. Since that time my traffic had been negligent, at best. In the past week, since setting up just three surrogate accounts in IFTTT following the formula I have been sharing, and the recipes I will share today, here are the results.

The increase was instant!

As you can see, the traffic increased dramatically, from about three or four hits a day on average, with some days getting zero, to a minimum of 15 and a high of over 50 hits in one day. So, it’s working and I will keep you up to date on that as it progresses. I intend to add four more surrogate accounts for next week, and four more the week after for a total of 12. It remains to be seen if they can build sustainable traffic.

And that’s not even the main benefit of this method.

The IFTTT SEO network is still in its infancy and the backlink mojo I am building up to for this site is going to be out of this world. I need to fine tune some things about the way I am posting here to get the most out of it. So how about those RECIPES I promised?

Each recipe will be listed in this format.

Those are the basics. I also spend a little time on each Facebook surrogate, sharing, liking and commenting, as well as building the friends, pages and groups of each account. Mass Planner can automate a lot of this if you set it up.

So there you have it in a nutshell, how to build an IFTTT network.

For each of the Blogger, Wordpress and Tumblr sites in each account, you will need to find at least two other sources of content. The easiest thing to do is to find industry niche blogs that don’t compete with you, but share good information and set them up to share some posts, based on keywords. You can do this by finding the RSS feed of the website you want to share on your blog, then setting it up in IFTTT, just like you did your own blog.

EVEN BETTER IDEA!

For each surrogate account, set up the blog to share everything as a “draft post”, then go in, write an introduction, share a bit from the other blog, write a tag line with your call to action and then schedule it to share. When it shares, you can set up the RSS feed to filter back through the other sites, propogating your content even further.

Here's a List of Facebook Groups that Welcome Advertisers, and a Little Advice on How not to get Blocked for Using it.

About six years back, I started a social media company with my good friend, James Frazier, called Social-ism.biz. It was in the heyday, wildwest of the Facebook era, when traffic grew on trees and money flowed without having to but ads. Since getting out of that highly profitable, but too stressful endeavor, I have worked on my own marketing strategies, most of which have combined some use of Facebook.

Recently I've been sharing some ideas about IFTTT networks and how to build and leverage them for traffic. I have managed to get my own new blog (first post less than ninety days ago) up to about 50 hits a day from 3-5 using almost exclusively the IFTTT network model, in about a week.

In addition, I am playing with a tool called MassPlanner, which is a new breed of social media dashboard that allows for some very interesting automated campaigning, including finding, joining and posting in FB groups.

As I have played around with a few techniques over the past two weeks, I have run afoul of the FB police a few times and am currently on my third time out for posting in groups too frequently. So, here is a list that I used to build a list about 100 strong of groups that will accept ads and produce some traffic. I recommend MassPlanner as the way to reach them all without it becoming a full time gig.

Here are some rules to remember!

Nobody likes Spam, make sure your posts are appropriate for the group and follow the rules.
The most effective method is to actually get involved in every group you want to market to, but this is not that, so expect a steady trickle, not a flood of traffic, but it is highly targeted.
The max per day, even with appropriate breaks, etc, seems to be about 50, so 40 is safe, anything over that you may be pushing it.
Use FB surrogates to get more sharing in. Create pen names and run them as experimental characters, it's fun.
The rules are not clear on the limits here, so err on the side of caution or you'll get a 3 day vacation from posting in groups.

So, last time we talked about the IFTTT platform and I gave you a brief description of how it works. To give a brief overview, here’s what it does. You choose channels to share your content into and set them up You choose a trigger (your blog or Facebook page for example) You connect the two IFTTT automatically shares things you add to your trigger onto each channel. By now, you’ve probably already figured out the IFTTT portion of this method. Setting up recipes is pretty easy, but one thing you may be struggling with is which of the many channels are beneficial, so, this entire post is going to be about that. I went back and forth on how to share this, but I came down to sharing all of the channels I typically use, with their icon from IFTTT, their name and a brief description. So, here goes nothing. There is one note I realized I needed to share. To use more than one account on any of these platforms, it will be necessary to have multiple IFTTT accounts, each with a different gmail (or your favorite email provider). So, if you have more than one blogger, Tumblr, WordPress, etc, you can feed them INTO a single a IFTTT account using RSS feeds (explained later), but you cannot put content onto more than one of each through a single account. I share from my main blog, MarkRMorrisJr.com into all of these channels, on multiple IFTTT accounts. So, in other words, I have multiple gmails each with a blogger, and a wordpress, etc. all sharing from my main blog. So, each of these has to be set up with each Gmail address you intend to use. Setup is time consuming, but after that, it’s all automated. A word about backlinks In the real world, businesses have signs, and billboards. There are also street signs and other indicators of where to go. This is exactly what backlinks do for websites. Each backlink created is a direct avenue to your content. It can provide traffic directly and it also indicates to the search engines that the content is more important, having been linked to. Each channel is marked as “this”, “that” or “both” to indicate where to put it in a recipe FACEBOOK (both) https://www.facebook.com/ If you don’t already have some idea of what Facebook is and does, this series of articles is probably not a good place to start. For writers, Facebook is the world’s biggest market place filled with people who are already reading! Over a billion of them. This channel is a great place to share your blog posts, and other content onto your personal profile, so that your “Facebook friends” can like it, share it and comment on it. FACEBOOK PAGES (both) There are three basic types of Facebook properties you can set up for yourself, a profile is your identity and is supposed to be labeled with your real name. Profiles can own pages, which are set up for interests, companies, or even personalities, like writers. You can have as many as you want to set up. Share your content onto them, or share content from them to other places. TWITTER (both) Twitter is the second largest social media platform on the internet. It features short messages and images. It’s a great, responsive tool for audience building and a great place to get people to share your content via links. Set this channel up to share some of your content automatically and then spend some time responding and sharing live on the platform for best results. LINKED IN (both) Linked In is the third largest social media platform. It’s like Facebook, for business in a lot of ways. If you are selling B2B, this platform is a must have. If not, it’s a good place to share links for SEO, but may not get you much traffic. It requires quite a bit of setup to make it effective for business use. I have personally optimized it to the point that it brought me multiple thousand dollar contracts, with no other work needed. BLOGGER (both) Blogger is Google’s blogging platform and one of the oldest running blog platforms online. It’s free, but a lot of high profile blogs are run on it. It’s a great option for your main website (just buy a domain name and a custom template) or for a feeder blog to put links onto. I use it for both, you can have as many sites as you care to set up. WORDPRESS (both) WordPress is the world’s largest CMS (content management system) it is a website builder and one of the most powerful blogging platforms around. You can build as many free Wordpress.com sites as you want. It works similar to Blogger. Wordpress.org is the self-hosted website building version that has to be installed and maintained separately. They are identical in function, with a few variations in features. I use WP as free blogs for each of my IFTTT accounts. TUMBLR (that) Tumblr is what is known as a “microblog” platform. It’s designed for short messages and images, much like Twitter, but will allow you to share as much or as little as you want. I use it to add links to my website, but have not spent much time developing connections, etc, inside of it. BITLY (that) Bitly, like so many things online started out to with one simple job to do, but has expanded into a more complex tool. In Bitly’s case, the job was to shorten URL, or web content addresses, primarily to fit into crowded Twitter statuses. But, Bitly also allows you to track how many people use what links, and it bookmarks them. Save your bitly “bitmarks” as public for a backlink. You can also add them into lists to be shared and more. Go to Bitly for more information. BUFFER (both, but primarily that) Buffer is the social media scheduling tool for people who don’t like schedules. Fill it full of posts, then tell it how often and where to put them and it will share to Twitter, Facebook, Linked In or Pinterest. It also houses links creating a backlink. I have not done scheduled posts through Buffer in a while but it’s a great way to get some minimum coverage going that you don’t have to think about. DELICIOUS (that) Delicious is a bookmark sharing site. It will build a link directed to your post and share it via bulletin board style lists. This has two main values to us as writers. One, if people see, like and share your content, it will drive traffic directly. Two, the search engines will crawl the site and find your link, making your page read as more relevant in the eyes of almighty Google. Set up to share your blog posts here. RSS FEED (this) RSS, or Really Simple Syndication feeds are super, super cool! Basically, almost every page online from a blog, to a facebook page, has the potential to be an RSS feed. So, you can take RSS from any of these and feed them into all of these other channels. Remember when I said you could feed multiple blogs into on IFTTT account? This is how. You will need to look up the details on your blog, or website, or the site you want to share from. Use this to share your blog content, everywhere that will let you. GMAIL (both) This probably requires no introduction. Gmail is Google’s email system that allows you to set up as many free accounts as you need. You can even use Gmail with branded email solutions that provide domain level email addresses. With Gmail as a trigger, or an action, you can do a lot of things. You can post to blogs via Gmail, or you could receive an email every time someone comments on your blog, it’s up to you. GOOGLE DRIVE (that) Google drive is part of the “cloud” you are always hearing about. It is a secure file system on an offsite server that allows you to save documents, images and files that you can access from any internet connected device. Save links from your blogs to here. It creates backlinks. You can use it for other things as well, such as triggering blog posts. INSTAPAPER (that) Instapaper is a content curation tool that will take web content from multiple sources and turn it into newspaper like content digest that you can read at any time. Not only can you read it, but other users can find it, it is accessible to search engines and can be shared. So, your links, in something like this will be powerful backlinks for your site. EVERNOTE (that) Evernote is a memo system and more. It has a workspace where you can remotely share documents and can be linked into multiple other apps, like calendars. For my purposes, it is just another backlink. But, play around and make sure you make the best of it. DIIGO (that) Diigo will save links and text from things you read, or want to read online so that you can find them later. I use it to build backlinks. Set up your blogs and even social media to leave posts here when you share. Each backlink can be followed, or read by search engines for great SEO benefits. POCKET (that) Similar to other bookmarking sites, Pocket stores content for later. It’s designed to give you a reading list of sites to revis

IFTTT automatically shares things you add to your trigger onto each channel.

By now, you’ve probably already figured out the IFTTT portion of this method. Setting up recipes is pretty easy, but one thing you may be struggling with is which of the many channels are beneficial, so, this entire post is going to be about that. I went back and forth on how to share this, but I came down to sharing all of the channels I typically use, with their icon from IFTTT, their name and a brief description. So, here goes nothing.

Writers! Build a Free Traffic Generating Network, Part One!

This is going to be a multi-part series on a free method for building nearly instant, growing and sustainable traffic to any web page you choose. Part 1

A few years back, I ran a social media marketing company. In my work I ran across a site called IF THIS THEN THAT that allows a user to set up repetitious actions between social media services, web apps, blogs, you name it. In effect, it allows you to use the web to automate many, many things in your life, for free!

What that means for a writer, like me, is that I can get dozens of backlinks, automatically generated, in deep links on sites like blogger, Wordpress, and Facebook, each and every time I post to my blog, or other site. FOR FREE! It will happen each time, every time, from now until I reset it, or tell it to stop. Right now, I have 4 accounts, each creating over a dozen links, for five posts a week, for more than 200 links a week, and that is just the beginning.

It’s not complicated! (just takes some time)

All that’s required to get an IFTTT account and begin making use of these features is an email address to confirm the account. Any email address. Enter Gmail, Google’s official communications arm, that allows users to create and operate multiple gmail accounts at one time. (there are differing answers as to how many), suffice it to say, more than you care to answer email for every day.

SO, to start your journey into traffic land, simply go to Google and set up a few Gmail accounts. (I am currently managing a half dozen) It’s pretty simple. You’ll want to be careful to use the “captcha” method of determining you are human or you’ll have to confirm your account with a phone number.

Five Steps you Can't Forget When Posting to Your Own Blog!

Sometimes writing your own blog is kind of like a carpenter working on his own house! (two things I know a thing or two about!) You forget what’s best practice when it comes to your own content. So, I thought I would share a secret five step formula with you that creates winning blog posts every time and is sure to get you noticed when you pitch for guest blogs or articles.

Step #1: Write a Headline That Can’t be Ignored!

Question:

You have exactly sixty minutes to write a post and your job depends on this post! How much of your time should you devote to the headline?

If you are like most writers, you probably think it should be your last concern, right? After all it represents a very small percentage of the post!

If this was your answer, you might have just lost your job!

Experts say you should spend twice as much time on your headline as the body of your post!

Shocking, isn’t it?

Most people agree, but statistically it has been proven that your headline will carry as much weight in driving traffic as the entire rest of the post!

If you were submitting this post for a guest blog position at an even halfway decent blog, the editors there will know this and without a rock solid headline, you are not getting published!

Unless you really want to do your post and your writing career a disservice, spend a lot of time brainstorming ideas for your post. In fact, make this your number one priority!
